If you’ve been eagerly awaiting the return of our Christmas event since last year then the wait is over. Our doors are officially open and the light trail is on and shining brighter than ever. From Victorian-inspired decorations to an extended outdoor light trail, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. So, gather your friends and family and start a new tradition with us at Wentworth Woodhouse.
Step into the World of ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas
There’s something magical about stepping back in time to celebrate Christmas in a grand, historic setting. Inside the magnificent State Rooms, guests will be transported into the world of the beloved poem, ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas. Every room tells a part of the story, meticulously decorated to capture the charm and anticipation of Christmas Eve. This year’s display takes traditional Victorian decor to new heights, with greenery, sparkling lights, and classic touches that evoke the spirit of Christmas from another era.
In the main House, the State Corridor will be transformed into a snowy landscape and the Van Dyck Room will become a Christmas Eve children’s bedroom scene, complete with a beautifully dressed antique bed. Other rooms will also feature traditional Christmas scenes and a Victorian Christmas feast. Visitors exploring the variety of beautifully dressed rooms can also take part in planned children’s activities, and take photos among the poem’s characters and 6-foot-high stockings – all lovingly created by a team of staff and volunteers.
From the quiet stillness of “not a creature was stirring” to the joyful arrival of St. Nicholas, each room offers something to delight every member of the family. It’s a chance to escape the hustle and bustle, slow down, and appreciate the simple joy of a classic Christmas tale.
“We’ve poured so much heart into bringing this story to life,” says Helen Flower, Event Manager. “Every detail has been chosen to create a space that feels both timeless and captivating for visitors of all ages.”
For families with young children, scattered throughout the house are interactive elements and activities to keep little ones engaged, making it a perfect outing for families eager to embrace the season together.
Explore a Larger-Than-Ever Light Trail in the West Front Gardens
After the storytelling indoors, guests can step outside to experience our expanded light trail across the historic West Front Gardens. Building on the success of last year’s trail, this year’s display is bigger, brighter, and even more spectacular.
Follow a path illuminated with twinkling lights that guide you through enchanting festive scenes. As the gardens transform under the glow, it’s easy to see why previous visitors have praised the light trail as “magical” and “unforgettable.” Whether you’re strolling hand-in-hand with loved ones or watching children marvel at the lights, the experience captures the joy of a Christmas evening spent outdoors.
“The Light Trail was incredible, with so much attention to detail,” shared a previous guest. “It was our first visit, but it definitely won’t be our last.”
Savour Festive Treats Before You Leave
The experience wouldn’t be complete without festive treats, and our outdoor vendors will offer plenty to enjoy! As you near the end of the light trail, take a moment to indulge in seasonal foods, from warm beverages and sweet treats to savoury delights. The main House gift shop will also be open for you to find unique gifts for friends and family or pick up a memorable keepsake from your visit.
What Makes Christmas at Wentworth Woodhouse So Special?
Wentworth Woodhouse’s Christmas event is extra special because it relies on local volunteers to make it happen.
“Many stately homes have far bigger pockets than we have and can afford to hire external companies and all the props and scenery required”, says Helen. “At Wentworth Woodhouse, we always make every penny count and harnessing the amazing talent of our volunteer and staff teams means we can really make the most of our budget.”
There’s another huge benefit to staging a ‘home-grown’ event, adds Helen: “It becomes truly special and unique to us, and it gives our staff and volunteers the opportunity to let their creative talents shine.”
The combination of a Victorian-inspired house display and an enchanting light trail offers an experience that appeals to both young and old, making it perfect for families, couples, and groups of friends alike. Returning visitors will find something fresh to enjoy, and newcomers can expect an experience that will leave them with memories to cherish far into the New Year.
