Bronwen Knight

Bronwen is a chartered town planner, with a BSc (hons) and Masters in Town & Country Planning, who is a member of the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI).

Having a lifelong passion for excellence in town planning, Bronwen originally starting her planning career as a Minerals Planner working her way to become the Chief Planner (Head of Planning and Transportation) at Rotherham, a position she held for 15 years until 2020. Under her leadership Rotherham was the first authority in the region to adopt a Local Plan, bringing forward attractive, sustainable sites for development to assist to grow the economy. Bronwen also transformed the service through modernisation, improved performance and fostered a positive approach to Planning, such that it was recognised nationally as the best performing planning authority in the country and winner of the RTPI Planning Excellence award for 2018/19.

Bronwen is currently the Director of Planning, Transportation and Strategic Highways at Wakefield Council.  Bronwen leads a team of over 70 staff, providing services dealing with planning applications, building control, conservation, enforcement, planning policy and transportation.  Bronwen has a key role leading on the development of master plans, the local plan and drawing down funding for key transportation projects including active travel proposals, walking and cycling and the determination of over 4,000 planning applications per year – from industrial units creating jobs and growth and major housing sites to the restoration and redevelopment of listed buildings – and working closely with West Yorkshire Combined Authority on investment opportunities.

Bronwen has shared her expertise, acting as a peer reviewer supporting and developing other planning authority’s, and has a strong reputation for leading efficient and effective teams, excellent negotiation skills and a positive attitude to problem solving.

She lives with her family in Rotherham and takes a keen interest in the local area and Wentworth in particular.
